Like a sick alcoholic, Illinois has fallen into an abyss. Unfunded pension liabilities grow by millions every day. The state’s credit rating is the worst in the country. Housing values are stuck somewhere around 30% below their peak. Real unemployment is high. Politicians dither.
Every time I read another piece of bad news about Illinois, I feel elated, because it means we are one step closer to the bottom. And just as with a raging alcoholic, Illinois hitting bottom can mean the beginning of recovery. It’s going to have to get so bad here that voters wake up and initiate real change, starting with the dismemberment of Illinois’ entrenched political class.
We are not there yet, but we are getting closer.
